Weekly Principal Calls to Families and Staff
As the Principal of Standley, I believe that communication between the school and families and staff is of utmost importance. Thus, I strive to send a phone call to our Standley families as necessary, usually at 6:00 p.m. I hope you appreciate the phone calls and the information they provide.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. Don’t forget that Sunday is the end of Daylight Savings so set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday to avoid any scheduling issues. Today is the end of the second grading period and students will receive a report on progress next Friday. You may view grades now by logging into Powerschool through the Parent Portal or your students log in. We want to remind you that students may attend Homework Club every Tuesday and Thursday after school to get help from peers and staff so they can get work done before they go home. If your student is not meeting standards and needs support, encourage or expect them to attend. A late bus is available for students who ride the bus or live in the bus drop off area so it is available to all. Students that attend are expected to be working on schoolwork and not disrupting others. Students who do not follow Homework Club rules will be asked to leave. Thank you for helping students follow the district policy regarding cell phone use at school. We have seen a reduction in the number of phones that are out during the day requiring confiscation. Just a reminder that students may not use their apple watch as a phone and glasses with a built in camera are never allowed on campus. The San Diego County Office of Education launched a new virtual training series to support families through the complex challenges that come with technology. The eight-session series was designed to help parents understand online safety and become confident digital partners in their child's learning journey. All sessions are free to attend and will take place via Zoom from 4 to 5 p.m. Register online to receive the meeting links. All sessions will have an option for Spanish interpretation. The second session will be “When Gaming Takes Over" on November 3rd. Finally, just to make sure you are prepared, school will be closed on Monday, November 10th and Tuesday, November 11th in observance of Veterans’ Day. School will resume a normal schedule on the 13th.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. Next week is Red Ribbon week with scheduled spirit days all week. We will kick off our anti-drug week by asking students to wear Red on Monday. Other days will be announced on the lunch court chalk board so students can show their commitment to staying drug free. Next week is also Halloween and we want to remind families that there are no costumes, masks, or props allowed at school that day. If students need to bring their costume for events after school, they may leave it in the main office for the day. Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. Thank you PTSA and its supporters for an amazing Parent Party last Friday and a highly successful fundraiser auction all supporting Standley Middle School. PTSA and volunteers have also finished a very successful Book Fair this week. We hope your child was able to find a book and get excited about reading. Standley holds monthly safety drills for all types of emergencies and this Thursday we participated in the California Great Shakeout to review procedures and safety during an earthquake. We are hosting guest speaker, Cam Awesome, on Thursday, October 23rd for 6th and 7th graders in the Auditorium. Cam Awesome is a former boxing Olympian who teaches students about the power of resiliency and perseverance. Next Friday, from 4-6, is our biggest student event of the year, Fright Night, on October 24th. There will be food, games, costume contest, music, and a haunted hallway. Tickets are on sale now for $2 and we sell out every year. Students can pick up a permission slip in the office and purchase a ticket at the finance window of the main office. We expect to sell out by Wednesday so get your ticket now. Fall sports are still under way but students should know that sign-ups for the winter sports of Volleyball and Soccer are starting now. The new season starts the week of November 3rd and students can find the link on our Standley website or see the flyer in the main office.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. Remember, that Monday is a non-instructional day and all SDUSD schools will be closed. We will return on Tuesday with a regular schedule. Fall sports are still under way but students should know that sign-ups for the winter sports of Volleyball and Soccer are starting now. The new season starts the week of November 4th and students can find the link on our Standley website or see the flyer in the main office. PTSA is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair at Standley next week. The Book Fair will run October 14-17 in the mornings and both lunches. Students love to visit the Book Fair and it is a great opportunity to get involved. You may sign up to volunteer in the Book Fair by clicking the link in the corresponding email or visiting the Standley PTSA website. Standley wants an A in LCFF form returns. We are currently at 89% completion rate, and we have a few families that we are still asking for a completed form. The completion of the LCFF forms help determine qualifications for Title 1 funds that are important to Standley and the district. If you received a reminder recently, please complete the form and help us get over 90% for that A. Federal Survey cards will be coming soon. It is important that you receive all communications so be sure to let us know if any contact information such as physical address, email address, or phone number has changed. This information is critical should any emergency occur at our site and we are trying to communicate. Your emergency contacts are also important because we will only release a student to you or people on your emergency contact list. If you have anyone that may pick up your child in an emergency, let us know ahead of time we can add them to your contact list. This will facilitate a pick up without any extra problems. Call the main office to update your information.
Thanks for listening and have a great 3-day weekend!

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. All students in attendance today should have received a report on progress in their last class to take home. If they do not have one, it can be viewed in Powerschool under P1. Please encourage or celebrate accordingly. If students need academic support, Homework Club started this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the library after school. Students need to sign up in the office at lunch to attend. Standley also has criteria for participating in school events such as dances, field trips, and 8th grade promotion determined by the Site Governance Team. These criteria can be found on page H of the student planner. Students must have a minimum 2.0 in academic/citizenship to attend field trips, activities, or middle school sports. In addition to citizenship, students are ineligible if they have any U's or any in/out of school suspension in the previous grading period. Students should contact their teacher that issued the U to figure out how to improve and get off the non-qualified list when it improves. Standley takes student safety seriously and we hold monthly drills to ensure students and staff know what to do in an emergency. Today, we held a lockdown drill, and students watched an informational presentation about Options Based Response with expectations during emergencies. All staff have been trained, and this was an important step to make sure everyone on campus understands what to do in any emergency. Sadly, our nation has seen teen suicide rates double in the last decade. To proactively address this issue, Standley Middle is partnering again with San Diego Youth Services HERE Now program to provide a "Check Your Mood Week", next week, filled with discussions about emotions and ways to help your friends. Counselors have sent out a separate message sharing details about the program and we are prepared to welcome San Diego Youth Services to support our student body. Finally, don’t forget to sign up for the PTSA Parent Party on October 10th. Come out to meet other parents, mingle with teachers, bid on some AMAZING silent auction items, support the Standley PTSA and simply unwind and enjoy a wonderful venue, AleSmith Brewing Company. All proceeds help fund Standley middle school student activities and enhance their middle school experience throughout the year. Buy your tickets today! Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. Today was the last day of the first grading period and all students will receive a report on progress next Friday. Please take a look and encourage or celebrate accordingly. If your child needs extra help, our after-school tutoring program, Homework Club, begins next week and will continue the rest of the year every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:55-3:55 in the media center. The purpose of Homework Club is for students to get assistance on any homework from either a staff member or peer tutor. Homework Club is not an after-school care program, or a holding area between school and outside activities. Students must bring work to do at all times with the goal of getting all homework done before they go home so their evenings are free. Students must sign up in the main office during lunch each day they plan on attending Homework Club. Rules will be posted at the sign-ups and reviewed in the media center. You may find them attached to this email. Encourage your child to attend as needed or as part of your daily routine. There is a late bus for students who normally ride the bus or live near the regular bus stop near Balboa Elementary.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. We are very grateful for all the support received from the Standley PTSA and they are hosting another event to bring families together while raising funds for Standley. On September 16th, from 11 am to 9 pm, visit Best Pizza & Brew in Clairemont and tell them you are there for the fundraiser. They are giving back 35% of sales to Standley PTSA for Standley Middle School. Did know UC Educate supports all five schools in the UC Cluster. Your time, effort, or money goes to support all schools in the cluster so be sure to check them out as well. The first UC Cluster meeting of the year is on ZOOM, Sept. 15th at 4:30 pm. If you want to know more about all schools in the cluster, this is a great way to be involved and hear the latest in the UC Cluster from principals and district representatives. Remind your student that the end of the first grading period will be on Sept. 19th. All students will receive a report on progress the following Friday, but you can view grades in PowerSchool anytime. If you do not have a ParentPortal account yet, reach out to our site tech, [email protected], and request the information. Thank you for helping your child to be on track and accountable to their work and behavior. When students focus on learning and positive choices it makes the school a great place for all.

Good afternoon Standley Middle families,
Public schools throughout California are required to provide information about themselves to the community in the form of an annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC). These report cards provide a variety of data to allow the public to evaluate and compare schools in several important areas:
● demographic information
● school safety and climate for learning
● academic data
● class size
● teacher and staff information
● professional development
● fiscal and expenditure data
The SARC, which follows the state's guidelines and document template, is issued each spring and focuses on the previous academic year. A SARC is typically 12- 14 pages long. I have attached an electronic copy of our site’s SARC for the 2023-24 school year. Hard copies of our SARC are also available in the main office. The 2023-24 SARC is available at https://www.sarconline.org/. You can also access our current SARC electronically at:
SARC link
If you have any questions about our school’s SARC, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. Next Tuesday we will post a Parent Presentation called “Tools for Success” on our school website. Hear about all the resources available to help you, help your student get unstuck when they are stuck. The link will be available on our school website Tuesday afternoon. Students will view some of these resources during the Principal’s Chat on Monday. Our first SSC meeting of the year is on Monday at 3:05 and the council is full thanks to the parents, staff, and student that were elected. The public is welcome to attend but may not vote on any items or speak outside of the “public comment” section of the meeting. Agendas are posted outside the office on the bulletin board, inside the office on the bulletin board, and on our school website. We will also post the minutes from the meetings in the same locations. Last year’s SSC prepared several documents for the school. They are attached to the corresponding email and linked on our website along with some district documents for Title 1. Please review the following documents:
Standley School Parent Compact
Standley Parent and Family Engagement Policy
SDUSD Parent and Family Engagement Policy English / Spanish
SDUSD Uniform Complaint Procedures

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. We want to remind you that schools will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day. School will resume with a normal schedule on Tuesday. We would like to offer a huge thanks to all the families that showed up to our Back To School Night. That was the largest turnout in the last few years. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a fantastic year. Middle School Athletics is in high gear here at Standley! Thank you to all the Standley Student Athletes that tried out for Basketball and Track & Field. Coaches will have final roster by next Friday. You recently received a packet of forms to complete and return. If you have not completed them yet you will receive a separate message from the school to do so. We thank you for taking the time to fill it out these forms making sure we have the most accurate information on file for your family. San Diego Police were recently at Standley providing a safety check on our bike racks. Class III e-bikes are not legal for children under 16 and should not be ridden on public streets. This has been a problem in the district, but I am happy to say Standley did not have any on campus. If students bring a Class III e-bike to school it will be impounded. Also, be aware that all students riding bikes or scooters to school must wear a helmet and enter campus from the lower field by the Pavilion Stage and walk bikes on and off campus to the bike rack. We want to keep all kids safe and bikes out of parking lots and traffic.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. We have been reviewing the schoolwide expectations during Academic Prep classes for the last two weeks. At this point, all students in attendance have heard our expectations and they are also in the first 18 pages of the planner to review at any time. Starting Monday, we will be holding students accountable to all rules and expectations. The most common issues are cell phones, listening devices, tardies, and dress code. Cell phones are allowed in possession but must be turned off and put away in their bag at 8:05 each day. They may not be used at any time in school unless a teacher allows for an educational opportunity. They may be turned back on at dismissal. Phones will be confiscated and could require a parent to pick up. Students may go to the office to make a phone call in an emergency, and you can relay messages to them through the office. Phones are not required at school for any purpose. The majority of students are on time to classes and being in class on time is vital to hearing instructions for the daily work. Teachers will mark students tardy if they are not in the classroom on time. Tardies will result in lowered citizenship marks. Students that are still having issues getting to a class on time should speak to their teacher to help find a solution.
We hope to see you at the Standley Back to School Night next Wednesday with classroom visits starting at 6:00 pm. We will hold the annual ELAC and Title 1 meeting in the library at 5:15 followed by an introduction to Ed Specialists for families with IEPs at 5:30. Standley Music will perform starting at 5:30 and there will be a GATE meeting at 5:45. Immediately following Back to School Night, PTSA will host its first General Association Meeting of the year in the library at 7:45. Students are not required to attend this event but are welcome to come. Please make sure you know your child’s schedule prior to attending. It can be found on Powerschool ParentPortal and we will send students home on Monday with a flyer they can write their schedule on for you.
Basketball and Track and Field Tryouts start next Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:05 - 4:35 down on the Basketball Courts for Basketball and P.E. field next to the main parking lot for Track & Field. All students that have signed up should be getting an e-mail from the district with a reminder. If you haven’t registered, please do so by clicking the link below. Please only choose one sport per season, in fairness of others trying out.

Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson thanking your family for an amazing first week of school. All students in attendance should have received a Standley Planner to stay organized for the year. Be sure to review the first 18 pages of the planner with your child as those are the basic expectations at school. All students have access to one free breakfast and lunch, and we encourage families to take advantage of the delicious options. Currently about half the school is participating and lines clear within 10 minutes of a 30-minute lunch with plenty of time to eat and hang out. You can view menus and nutrition information at SDUSD Food Services. Counselors have been reviewing schedule change requests daily and students will be notified if a schedule change was approved. It is not possible to accommodate requests to move teachers or periods as all students need each class and we only have so many teachers and periods in a day. Any mistakes have been corrected and we will continue to work with teachers to makes sure students are in the correct placements and electives. We encourage all families to remain courteous and patient driving at drop off and pick up each day keeping those times safe for students. Please come support Standley PTSA with the first dine-out of the new school year. Primo’s right here on Governor is an all day dine-out on 8/20 where 20% of the proceeds will go to Standley. Head to standleyptsa.org to get the flyer that you must present. If you are interested in being a part of the decision making process at Standley, please consider joining the SSC (School Site Council), SGT (Site Governance Team), or ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee). Parent representatives are always needed and we will have some openings this year. You may self-nominate by sending an email to Mr. Pearson ([email protected]) indicating your preference. I will reach out with options next week. The Public Library on Governor has asked that we notify families they will be closed and under construction August 18th through Spring of 2026 with facility improvements.
Finally, we want to get some dates on your calendar.
August 27th is Make-up Picture Day through PE classes and Back To School Night
September 1st no school for Labor Day
September 9th we will provide a virtual Tools for Success parent presentation
8/8/25 6 p.m.
Hello Standley Families,
This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. The first day of school begins Monday with the first bell ringing at 8:00 a.m. and a 2:45 dismissal. We will pass out schedules by grade level and alpha to all students starting at 7:30 on the lunch court. Each schedule will have all of their classes, room numbers, teacher names, ID#, and a school map. If you have a free morning on Monday and would like to help us distribute schedules to students, we have a few sign ups available on the link provided in the corresponding email. We know students are finding creative ways to look at draft schedules on-line but these are not accurate so students must pick up a schedule on Monday and follow that schedule. They may go to the wrong classes otherwise. Staff will be out in force to help them find their way and answer questions. If a student notices a problem, like a missing class or the wrong class, they will go to the counseling office during the period with the problem to get it fixed. For other non-error issues with schedules, students may complete a “Schedule Change Request Form” in the main office and leave for counselors. They review these later in the week after all primary scheduling is completed. We ask that parents do not join students on campus or in buildings to minimize crowds and keep lines organized. Please do not use the staff parking lots for drop-off or pick-up. The driveway must remain clear for district vehicles and school buses. Drop-offs and pick-ups are along Governor and/or Radcliffe. Please be sure to allow extra time as the neighborhood is experiencing road construction along Governor slowing things down. All students will be able to pick up a breakfast item every morning, no charge, and lunch will continue to be free for all students this year. Students will be able to type in their ID number for breakfast, starting at 7:30,and will get a temporary ID card in first period to use at lunch. All students need to bring their school issued laptop, charged, with the charging cable and positive attitude. Teachers will let students know what is recommended throughout the course of the day. Students will not be marked tardy, and we will assist them getting to classes. We are super excited to welcome students back to campus and staff have been preparing classrooms and activities worthy of your children. We look forward to partnering with you on your child’s educational journey this year. Please refer to our website for more information about Standley and don’t forget to sign up with PTSA!
