Principal Calls to Families and Staff

Weekly Principal Calls to Families and Staff

As the Principal of Standley, I believe that communication between the school and families and staff is of utmost importance.  Thus, I strive to send a phone call to our Standley families as necessary, usually at 6:00 p.m.  I hope you appreciate the phone calls and the information they provide.

4/12/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We are hoping to see you at our annual Open House next Wednesday from 5-6:30 to visit classrooms displaying curriculum and student work.  There is no set schedule so you may visit any classes that you like and feel free to bring future Seahawks from our UC Cluster elementary schools.  PTSA is hosting the Buy One Get One Book Fair all next week before school and at both lunches.  The students love to visit the Book Fair and it is a great opportunity to get involved.  You may sign up to volunteer in the Book Fair by visiting the Standley PTSA website.  The end of the fourth grading period, and last progress report of the year, is next Friday.  Final semester grades will be available in Powerschool after school is out for the year.  We will use this progress report to determine initial qualification for end of year 8th grade activities including the Promotion Ceremony.  Grades and citizenship will continue to accumulate through the end of the year and show up on transcripts so remind students to keep up the effort all the way to the end.  8th grade students who do not meet the criteria for end of year activities will be personally notified by May 3rd  with reasons and assisted with a course of action by counselors.  Criteria has been shared with students in a variety of ways multiple times over the year and can be found on page L of the student planner.  We wish every student success in their action plan to meet their goals finishing middle school.

3/29/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Next week is Spring Break and schools will not be in session.  School will resume with a normal schedule on April 8th.  April 8th is going to be a special day with a lunar eclipse around 11:00 am.  We have shared safety tips with students today with regards to viewing the eclipse and ask that you reinforce they do not watch the eclipse directly without using approved eyewear for this purpose.  Please add our Career Fair and Open House to your calendar on April 17th.  The Career Fair will be from 4-6 and the Open House runs 5:30-6:45.  Campus will be open to all UC Cluster families with students currently attending and those in our feeder schools that will be future Seahawks.  More information will be sent after Spring Break.  Our very own UC High Baseball team is going to play a game at Petco Park on Monday, April 22nd at 4pm. The $25 ticket also includes a Padre ticket to the Tuesday, April 30th game vs. The Cincinnati Reds. This is a great opportunity to support our UC High athletes and have a fun night out.  This is your last chance to support Standley PTSA's Krispy Kreme Digital Dozens fundraiser.  It ends this Saturday, March 30 so be sure to purchase your Krispy Kreme Digital Dozens from now until March 30 and 50% of your order will be donated back to Standley Middle School PTSA. All you have to do is buy your dozens online now, and when you are ready to enjoy them, visit a Krispy Kreme near you and redeem using your code. Since dozens can be redeemed nationwide, even friends and family outside of the area can participate, so please take this one last chance to share the link far and wide. Thank you for your support!

Thanks for listening and have a great Spring Break!

3/22/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We want to remind you that schools will be closed for Spring Break in San Diego Unified the entire first week of April.  We want to make sure it is on your calendar so you can make appropriate plans for your child.  On the heels of Standley Middle School receiving the California Distinguished School Award, we now have another honor to share with you.  Our 6th grade Math teacher, Mrs. Clifner, was selected as the SDUSD Middle School Teacher of the Year and was notified in her classroom this week with a surprise announcement.  All of our teachers put in their best and it is fantastic to see Mrs. Clifner get recognized for the commitment and effort she brings each day for her students.  Congratulations Mrs. Clifner and good luck in the countywide competition! Please join the PTSA for a live meeting on Wednesday, March 27th at 6:30 pm (and a light snack) in the Media Center. Come and hear principal updates, teacher updates and updates from the PTSA regarding how they supported the staff and students this school year. Also, it is election time, so this is a great chance to meet your incoming board for next school year and share ideas that will continue to help and support our school community. We look forward to seeing all of you there.  Finally, we will hold our annual Open House and Career Fair on April 17th in the evening.  This is a great opportunity to view your child’s current and future classrooms.  We will also invite the feeder school families to attend as an opportunity to be on campus and get excited for their time here at Standley.  More information will come out in April and on our website.

3/15/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. We value your input and are asking all families to complete the California School Parent Survey   This survey is an opportunity to communicate your perceptions about your child’s school. Your participation is voluntary.  The information you provide will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement.  This is an anonymous survey designed so that no one can be identified from the data. You do not have to respond to any questions that you feel could be used to identify you. Simply skip any such questions. We only have a 15% completion rate at this time and have a goal of 70%.  Help us in the decision making process by sharing your insights.

Do you need a good excuse to get some Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts? Standley Middle School PTSA has partnered with GroupRaise and Krispy Kreme for a Digital Dozens fundraising campaign. Purchase your Krispy Kreme Digital Dozens (from now until March 30) and 50% of your order will be donated back to Standley Middle School PTSA. All you have to do is buy your dozens online now, and when you are ready to enjoy them, visit a Krispy Kreme near you (dozens are redeemable nationwide) and redeem using your code. Since dozens can be redeemed nationwide, even friends and family outside of the area can participate, so please share the link far and wide. We thank you for your support!

Next Thursday we will host Coffee with the Principal in the library at 8:30 to hear about the district budget cuts and how they will impact the district and our school. As a reminder, Thursday night is also our College Make It Happen night sponsored by Cal-SOAP. The event will be held through ZOOM from 6pm-7pm.  See the flyer in the corresponding email or on our website to register.

3/8/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Every student in attendance today should have received a progress report for the first 6 weeks of the second semester.  This is a good check in to see if students are on track to meet their goals for the next progress report on April 26th.  Congratulate or encourage accordingly.  Don’t forget we have Homework Club every Tuesday and Thursday in the library after school with staff to help answer questions and get homework finished.  Don’t forget to change your clocks forward one hour this weekend due to Daylight Savings Time.  Help your child understand they will be losing one hour of sleep this weekend so they can adjust before school on Monday.  All Standley families are invited to attend our College Make It Happen night sponsored by Cal-SOAP. The road to college is an exciting adventure, with many twists and turns. Attend this middle school parent-student workshop and we will help you build a map of requirements, resources, and guidelines.  The event will be held through ZOOM on Thursday, March 21st, from 6pm-7pm.  See the flyer in the corresponding email or on our website to register. Finally, next Friday, we will be changing the PIN numbers for access to free breakfast and lunch to match student ID numbers.  Currently, all students have a student ID # and a Lunch PIN #.  Next Friday students will no longer use the old Lunch PIN # and just use their school ID #.  Posters and signage will be up next week to remind students.  We hope this makes it less confusing moving forward for all students.

3/1/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We are so excited to let you know that Standley Middle was just announced as one of 293 secondary schools in the state to be recognized as a California Distinguished School.  Schools are recognized based on data that demonstrates successful efforts to provide exemplary public education to all students.  We thank the staff, students, and families for helping us to receive this honor.  March is National Nutrition Month and this year's theme is Beyond The Table. Good health & nutrition go beyond what we eat to every area of life. Learn more about the importance of fueling bodies at every age, plus eating with sustainability in mind. We'll be celebrating in SDUSD all month.

Middle School Spring Sports are starting up next week.  If you haven’t signed up for Cheer, Flag Football or Wrestling, and are interested, do so immediately.  Practices start next Tuesday.  Everyone that signed up should get a communication this weekend or on Monday.  Practices will generally be Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:15 – 4:45.  Wrestling is the only exception, as they will practice 3:45 – 5:15 at U.C. High on the same days.  We want to wish good luck to both our Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer Teams as they finish off their season in hopes of a championship this Saturday.  All games are at Mira Mesa High School, the Girls semi-final Volleyball game starts at 12:00 p.m., and the Boys semi-final Soccer game starts at 12:45 p.m.  If they win those games, they will play later that day in the finals.  Good luck Seahawks!

We hope you make it to the PTSA Parent Party but if you do not, the auction ends tonight at 9 pm. You do not have to be present at the party to win and friends and family are welcome to participate. Auction items include two reserved parking spots at the upcoming 8th grade promotion and generous donations from Standley families and our local businesses and institutions. Please check out the auction items here and consider making a bid. All proceeds go to benefit Standley PTSA to be used for programs such as teacher grants, club grants, honors cards, etc.

2/23/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Just a reminder that Middle school Spring Sports are starting up the week of March 4th.  If your student hasn’t signed up for Cheer, Flag Football, or Wrestling, they must do so by next Friday.  Remember, you can only do one sport per season and your grades and citizenship matter just like in High School.  Our Football coach will be here at lunch Monday, and the wrestling coach plans to be here at lunch on Tuesday to meet our Standley Student Athletes.  The wrestling coach is having a Parent Meeting as well on Thursday, February 29th in the Auditorium at 6 p.m.  Students can see Mr. Hartman at lunch if they have any questions.  Speaking of Middle School Athletics, we want to wish good luck to both our Soccer and Volleyball teams, who all start their playoff run tomorrow toward another hopeful championship!

Sixth grade English students just completed the Read, Imagine, Create project with a culminating event in the media center with all projects on display.  This was an amazing display of effort and talent, and we thank the families that were able to attend during the day to view the projects.  The students were proud of their works and so were we.  The end of the third grading period is next Friday, and progress reports will go out on the 8th.  Please be sure to review this with your child and help them make plans to improve or maintain for the rest of the semester.  Remember, 8th grade promotion eligibility and awards criteria are determined by the last progress report on April 19th.  Students have 7 more weeks to meet their goals.  Don’t forget that Homework Club is available to students every Tuesday and Thursday in the library immediately after school.

2/15/24 6:00 p.m.

2/9/24 2:50 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

I am writing to follow up on the incident that was communicated to families earlier this week regarding a toy gun and threat rumors.

School Police and school administration investigated the incident, and determined there was no threat to our school or the safety of students and staff.  Incidents like this cause students to talk and report other rumors, some old and new, that we also follow up on.  All rumors that were reported have been looked into and found to be non-credible.

We will continue to have age-appropriate conversations with our students about the importance of telling a trusted adult immediately if they see or hear something concerning while at school. We would appreciate these conversations at home to make sure students are reporting to adults before other students.

2/5/24 5:00 p.m.

Hello Standley families,

I am writing to make you aware of an incident that occurred today, involving one of our students.

Today a student brought a plastic toy gun to school and showed it to other students. Students immediately reported this to school staff amidst rumors of a threat to the school. We took swift action, confiscating the toy gun and conducting interviews with students and staff. School police are currently investigating the incident in collaboration with the family of the student involved. The appropriate disciplinary steps have been taken.

The safety and security of our students is the district's top priority. Our school police work with educators every day to ensure that they have a safe learning environment. Our counselors are available to support students in need.

We will continue holding age-appropriate conversations with our students about the importance of telling a trusted adult if they see or hear something concerning while at school.

1/26/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  All students in attendance today should have received their final report cards for semester one.  Grades and citizenship reset this week and the first semester grades are a great indicator of how the second semester will go.  Encourage and/or congratulate accordingly.  Over 40 United States Marines were on campus today running students through drills in PE and interacting during lunches.  We are so grateful to partner with them each year and thank them for their service.

Attention 8th Grade Parents. This is your chance to debut your 8th grader in the 2023-2024 Yearbook.  It is also last call for 8th grade families to submit your 8th Grade Ad in our very own Standley Yearbook.  Yearbooks prices increase $2 after January 26th.

The Standley PTSA reminds you to help raise funds for the school by participating in the monthly Farm Fresh program.  The fundraiser is for Standley families, friends, and community members. Orders are filled by local Yasukochi Farms and include fresh produce and other items. To participate, place your order by the first Monday of the month for delivery to the Standley pool parking lot on the afternoon of the second Tuesday of the month. Orders can be placed on the PTSA website.

1/19/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We would like to invite you to attend the UC Cluster meeting and the Standley PTSA General Association meeting scheduled next week.  The UC Cluster meeting is scheduled for Monday at 4:30 on ZOOM and the Standley PTSA meeting will be on Wednesday at 6:30 pm on Zoom.  These are great opportunities to hear the latest in our cluster and school with the ease of dropping into a ZOOM meeting.  We hope to see you there.  Today was the official end of the first semester and all students’ grades and citizenship will reset next week.  Encourage your child to start on the right foot by completing all work, being to class on time, and maintaining appropriate behaviors.  The grades on the P4 progress report in April will determine eligibility for the 8th grade promotion ceremony and all second semester awards.   All students in attendance today received report cards but they can also be viewed in PowerSchool through your Parent Portal account or using your student’s ID and password.  Standley welcomes the United States Marines next Friday to partner with our PE classes running kids through drills and exercises.  It is one of our favorite PE days of the year.   Finally, SDUSD would like all 8th grade families to know that the 2024-25 athletic physical packets for sports will be posted to athleticclearance.com on Friday, June 7, 2024.  For the 2024-25 school year, all physicals will need to be completed after that date (Friday, June 7, 2024) to be covered for the entirety of the 2024-25 school year.

1/12/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update. School will not be in session on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  We will return to a normal schedule on Tuesday.  The Standley Annual Spelling Bee has started and qualifying rounds were held in English classes.  The all-school Spelling Bee final will be on January 17th and we wish all of our spellers the best of luck.  Our perimeter fence is fully operational and that means we are locking all gates to campus when the 8:05 bell rings.  Any student that has not entered campus by then will be locked out and need to go to the main office to check in prior to attending class.  This can easily be resolved by getting here a little early.  If you do arrive late, be sure to drop them off by the main office so they don’t have to walk around the entire school.  We are starting a new round of Seahawk Session next week and We just finished working on community agreements – everyone chose agreements that were important to them.  We’re moving forward with how to create good habits.  We’re looking at what forms our habits, and how to form positive habits so we can enact purposeful change.  Finally, we are hosting a budget review meeting on Tuesday, January 16th at 3:15 on Zoom to talk about the budget survey and how it relates to next year’s budget.  You can find the Zoom link on our website the day of the event.

1/5/24 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson wishing you a Happy New Year!  We hope everyone was able to safely enjoy their time off.  We would like to remind you of a few important dates this month.  Schools will be closed on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the end of semester one is on Friday the 19th.   We encourage you to take some time to look at PowerSchool gradebooks and the Google or Canvas classroom pages for each class with your child.  This will be time well spent to help them focus in on make-ups, priorities, and deadlines.  Encourage your child to ask questions and finish confident.  The new semester means a fresh start with new grades and citizenship.   The next UC Cluster meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 22nd  at 4:30 p.m. via Zoom so put a hold on your calendar and we look forward to seeing you there.  Next week Standley is partnering with San Diego Youth Services HEREnow program to provide a “check your mood week” for 7th and 8th graders with discussions about emotions and ways to help their friends.  A separate message was sent to all 7th and 8th grade families about this program.  Finally, PTSA is asking you to cause a scene for a good cause by supporting their next dine out fundraiser at Blaze Pizza on Balboa January 23rd from 5:00-8:00.  Show the attached flyer for dine-in or carry-out and the Standley PTSA will receive 30% of the proceeds.  Thank you for supporting the PTSA which in turn supports all Standley students.

12/1/23 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  In the holiday spirit of giving, AVID is asking you to help make the holidays great for families in need.  Our annual Toys for Tots drive started today and AVID is collecting new, unwrapped toys in their annual support of this program which is in its 76th year. Donation boxes are set up around campus and in the main office if your family would like to participate.  PTSA gives in many ways to Standley Middle and one of the ways they support this giving is through their regular Farm Fresh Fundraiser. These produce boxes are a great way to develop healthier eating habits while supporting your local community farmers – and Standley earns money back for the school! You can order a box of freshly picked delicious fruits and vegetables each month.  Orders are due by the 1st Monday of every month and will be delivered on the 2nd Tuesday to the Swanson Memorial Pool for pickup. Visit the PTSA website to place your order.  If you are looking for child-care before or after school, Prime Time at Standley still has space available.  Students will have access to nutritious snacks, academic support, enriching activities, and the ability to see friends and make new ones in the program. Prime Time is a free program that provided by the state of California. If interested, or have any questions, please contact Prime Time at (858) 688-2184 or at [email protected].  Finally, the Doyle Elementary PTA is hosting a Winter Wonderland fundraiser on Saturday, December 9th at the Doyle Park & Recreation center.
There will be real snow, food vendors, jump house, crafts, and more for families to enjoy.  We hope you can support our UC Cluster Elementary school.

11/27/23 10:30 a.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling to update you on a recent event this morning.  At the end of first period the fire alarm went off and we immediately began our evacuation procedure that we practice monthly and students did a great job.  We were able to quickly identify the location source and extinguish an isolated restroom fire.  No students were in or near the restroom during the fire and no students or staff were injured in any way.  The fire department came out immediately to verify school safety and work with us and school police to investigate the cause of the fire.  We hope you had a great break and we thank you for supporting Standley Middle School.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We want to remind you that next week is Thanksgiving Break.  School will not be in session and students should return on Monday, November 27th to regularly scheduled classes.  I want to take this opportunity to share a few things I am thankful for.   I am thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn – you give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here.  I am thankful for the support of the parents in creating the fantastic partnerships for our students.  I am thankful for the teachers, support staff, and administrators who really care about our students academically, physically, socially and have the best interests of our students at heart.  I am also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school.  Please be sure your students take the time to rest and reflect on what they are thankful for and be ready to give their best when they return.  All students in attendance today received a report on progress to help them make plans for what they need to do after the break leading to final grades at the end of the semester in January.  Remember, students can view these at any time in Powerschool.  Standley held its first ever Lunch on the Lawn this week inviting 6th grade families to have lunch on the lawn with their child during the school day.  We had over 100 families participate, and students have already been asking when they get to do it again.  We will certainly look for some future dates to include other grades and another opportunity for 6th graders.  Thanks to all the families that were able to attend.  Finally, Standley’s No Place For Hate club hosted a United Against Hate Week this week with themed spirit days, United Against Hate pledge, and other activities.  We thank all students for participating and helping to change the way we understand each other and interact positively.

11/9/23 6:00 p.m.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Please be aware that school will not be in session tomorrow due to Veteran’s Day.  In honor of Veterans Day, I would like to thank everyone and their families who have served and are serving in our military.  We are grateful for your service and sacrifice.   AVID’s Annual Canned Food Drive is taking place now until the 16th of November.  We need your help to donate canned food and other non-perishable items to those in need. Boxes for the canned goods were passed out to all Advisory Classes this week. Remember, all items must be non-perishable, and cannot be homemade goods, or come in glass jars. The Advisory Class that donates the most canned foods will be rewarded with a special treat from AVID club. Please consider donating to help the less fortunate and all items will be donated to the San Diego Food Bank. We thank you for your support.  Congratulations to the winners of our 5 on 5 Lunchtime Basketball Tournament.  Fourteen teams have been competing for the title and the Grizzlies came out on top.  Thank you to all the teams that played providing great entertainment at lunch and good sportsmanship.  The next UC Cluster Meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 13th at 4:30.   Join to hear the latest from school principals, board member, and community connections for the entire cluster.  Today was the end of the second grading period and students will receive reports on progress next week followed by school closures for Thanksgiving break the 20th through the 24th

Congratulations to the Standley Middle School Athletic teams for the fall season.  We had a tremendous turnout this year for basketball and Track & Field with excellent results.  The girls’ basketball team placed second in their division while the boys’ basketball team won the championship.  Both the boys’ and girl’s Track and Field participants had personal bests with many gold medals.  Students can be part of the fun by signing up for winter sports tryouts now.  Boys’ and girls’ soccer and volleyball begins on December fourth.  Visit our website for more information.  Standley will participate in School Lunch Plastic Free Day on November 8th along with other schools across the district.  We challenge your child to be plastic free at lunch that day.  The Standley PTSA is hosting another Bites for Benefits on Wednesday, November 8 all day at the Rubio's on Towne Center. Just scan the QR code at the register and 30% of all proceeds go back to the Standley PTSA.  We would like to thank the PTSA and all the parent volunteers that made the Scholastic Book Fair a big success.  Students had access to age-appropriate materials all week, before school and during lunch, to pick up items of interest.  This would not be possible without your support, and we are grateful for your time.  The end of the second grading period is next Thursday, and progress reports will go home on the 17th.  Remember, Powerschool is available to view grades and look for missing work at any time.  If your child is having trouble, they should reach out to their teacher to determine next steps towards improvement for the final semester grade in January.  Finally, next Friday is Veterans Day and school will not be session.  Please plan accordingly.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Congratulations and thank you families!  Standley was the number one middle school for attendance last year and the first report this year shows us with the highest attendance for middle schools in the district again.  Attendance is a key indicator of student success, and we appreciate the efforts you give to make sure your child is here.  While here, we support through various ways including Seahawk Sessions.  We have just completed a full round of Seahawk Sessions with all students on campus. We reviewed the Six Pillars of Character and what it means to be a person of good character. Students were given a character challenge to leave a one sentence note of kindness to a person either at school or in their lives outside of Standley. A new round begins next week about community agreements and will be completed by January 12th.  The Standley PTSA is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair all next week on site.  The Book Fair will be open before school, during both lunches and students will come with their English class during the week.  PTSA is looking for volunteers to support the event.  Book Fairs are an excellent opportunity to get on campus and observe middle schoolers. You might even be able to spot your own child and say hello to their friends.  Visit the Standley PTSA website to sign up.  Parents may create a free e-Wallet account to add funds and/or invite family and friends to contribute so your child can select their own books without needing cash on campus!   Next Tuesday is Halloween and we wanted to remind you that students may not wear costumes to school.  Students are welcome to show their holiday spirit with Halloween themed clothing that complies to dress code standards.  Students should not wear anything that promotes the use of drugs, alcohol, or weapons and costume props are not allowed.  Costumes and props may be confiscated.  If students bring costumes to school for later use, we strongly encourage them to leave these items in the main office to pick up after school.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Yesterday was officially the Great Shakeout and all schools in SDSUD participated in an earthquake drill.  Standley practices monthly drills in preparation for all sorts of emergencies so that both staff and students know what to do.  We want to invite your child to sign up now for the Winter Middle School Athletics Session.  We are offering both soccer and volleyball in the Winter Session with both sports starting December 4th.  Be sure to visit out school website to get signed up.  Your child can reach out to Mr. Hartman in the main office if they have any questions.  School CHOICE closes on November 15th and we have been hosting school tours for families considering Standley next year. The personal school tours are posted on our website but families may also view our virtual tour on the counselor page of our website or come after school for a self-guided tour.  CHOICE families already enrolled in our cluster schools of Spreckels, Curie, or Doyle do not need to complete a new application as they will automatically be enrolled at Standley unless they return to their neighborhood school or choose a different school through the CHOICE application. Our biggest ASB event of the year, Fright Night, is on Friday, October 27th from 4-6.  Tickets are on sale now for $2.  If you would like to donate unopened bags of candy to support the event, feel free to drop them off in the main office during office hours.   Finally, we ask that all families discuss appropriate cell phone and social media use with their children.  Appropriate use of these devices and apps does not come natural and all families should set expectations and boundaries or remove access.  Standley hosted the SafetyNet presentation for all students and guardians to share appropriate use of devices and social media and we have reviewed the cell phone rules at school.  Be aware that phones that are out during the school day or in use in any way may be confiscated by any school personnel and if it is their first offense, they can pick them up at the end of the day.  Students have already had plenty of warnings over the last nine weeks.  Repeat offenders will not be able to get the phone and a parent or guardian will be required to pick up the phone which may result in a student not having it for several days.  We would rather students not bring them to school but if you allow it and they do, we expect the rules to be followed.   Thank you for your support with this issue.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Here at Standley, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. We understand there are some concerns around the security of our schools and communities due recent world events.  School Police will continue to monitor international events and local response, including maintaining contact with law enforcement partners, and to share safety updates with staff and families as available.  Please know our Comprehensive School Site Safety Plan equips our site with an emergency preparedness plan and staff is trained to implement it. The emergency preparedness plan is developed, and approved, in collaboration with School Site Council and School Police.  Thank you for partnering with us to keep our schools and students safe.  Students voted on a yearbook cover for this year and the new cover was unveiled today.  The Yearbook students are working hard to create another great collection of memories for our students.  Be sure to order yours early to avoid price increases or missing out.  See our school website for links to order or complete the form in the main office.  I am reaching out to ask every family to complete a very short questionnaire that will increase funding opportunities for San Diego Unified students. The information is collected to support Federal Impact Aid funding and is kept confidential. Impact Aid funds are designated to assist school districts that enroll federally-connected students. This includes children of active-duty uniformed services personnel, children who live on federal property or in subsidized federal housing, and children whose parents are employed on eligible federal property.

Impact Aid funds become part of the district's general operating budget and support instructional activities for all students.  At your next opportunity, we ask you to please sign-in to the Parent Portal in PowerSchool and complete the short survey, following the steps below:

  • Select Forms from the left-hand navigation menu, then select 2023-24 Impact Aid Program Survey Form.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Today is the end of the first grading period and we will send progress reports home next Thursday.  Remember, grades and other assignment details can be found in Powerschool using your child’s log in or your own.  If you need help with Powerschool, reach out to our office and we will assist.  The School CHOICE window opens next week for families looking to apply for schools outside of their residential boundary.  The window is open until November 15th to be eligible for enrollment next year.  If you are already enrolled through CHOICE in the UC Cluster you do not need to do anything additional to remain.  We want to remind you that next Friday is a non-instructional day in SDUSD and schools will be closed.  All parking lots will be closed for construction on that day.  We will resume a normal schedule on Monday, Oct. 9th.  Here are some dates to add to your calendar in October.

The  annual UC Educate Oktoberfest will be held at the Standley Park on October 7th from 2-6.  Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY with food, games, entertainment, and their famous beer & wine garden.  Proceeds go to support all 5 UC Cluster schools, so we hope to see you there.

Standley ASB will host its most popular event of the year on October 27th from 4-6 called Fright Night.  Students will be able to wear costumes and show their spirit in a Halloween warm up.  They can enjoy music, snacks, friends, and enter the Haunted Hallway if they dare.  Tickets will go on sale soon so students should pay attention to the school announcements.  Students must meet citizenship eligibility requirements to attend.

If you can’t make the Standley Fright Night, or you just want more, check out the UC Cluster Spooky Night at UC High School.  All are invited to this event on October 30th from 5-8 to enjoy music, games, food, haunted hallways, and a trunk or treat!

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Thank you to the families that attended the SafetyNet presentation on Tuesday.  It was loaded with helpful information to help families navigate raising children with devices and the internet.  Hopefully, you were able to attend and can share the information with friends and family.  Remember, all students in attendance this week heard the student version through PE classes.  Our after-school tutoring program, Homework Club, begins next week and will continue the rest of the year every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00-4:00 in the media center.  The purpose of Homework Club is for students to get assistance on any homework from either a staff member or peer tutor.  Homework Club is not an after-school care program, or a holding area between school and outside activities.  Students must bring work to do at all times with the goal of getting all homework done before they go home so their evenings are free.  Students must sign up in the main office during lunch each day they plan on attending Homework Club.  Rules will be posted at the sign ups and reviewed in the media center.  You may find them attached to this email.  Encourage your child to attend as needed or as part of your daily routine. As the district continues to strengthen the communications between school and home, some new options are in place for schools to include text messages and emails with multiple translations.  If you feel you are missing our calls and emails, please make sure the school has your correct cell phone number and email address to be sure you are getting our messages.  If you would like your messages in a language other than the one you are receiving, reach out to our office and let us know and we will try to accommodate.  Finally, come to the next PTSA General Association meeting on Wednesday, September 27th, at 6:30 P.M., and hear how PTSA plans to support our Standley community this school year during their budget review.  Hear school updates from me and find out ways you can get involved and get answers to your middle school questions/concerns from other Standley parents. You may attend in person at the Standley Media Center or virtually through the Zoom link.  The PTSA looks forward to connecting with all of you!

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Thank you to the families that attended the Tools for Success Parent Presentation on Tuesday evening.  The purpose of the presentation was to share tools that you and your child can access to help them get unstuck when they are stuck.  If you were unable to make it, you can find a link to the presentation on our school website and it is highly recommended.  Next week we are hosting a SafetyNet Presentation for all students during PE classes on Monday and Tuesday.  The San Diego Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (SD-ICAC) and the San Diego Police Foundation are providing tools to help families manage their online lives. Students will learn about cyberbullying, social networking, gaming, sexting, and online predators. Parents and caregivers are invited to attend a parent presentation from SafetyNet on Tuesday at 6 via Zoom.  You will find the link under “Upcoming Events” on our school website.  The first UC Cluster Meeting of the year will be on Monday via Zoom with the link also posted under “Upcoming Events”.   Finally, please support the Standley PTSA by going to the PTSA Dine Out Fundraiser (Bites for Benefits) at The Kebob Shop in La Jolla on Thursday, September 21. They are going to give back 50% from purchases all day (lunch or dinner) using the attached flyer or coupon code.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We would like to offer a huge thanks to all the families that showed up to our Back To School Night.  That was the largest turnout in the last few years.  We are grateful for your support and look forward to a fantastic year.  Next Tuesday we will host a Parent Presentation called “Tools for Success” at 6:00 p.m. via ZOOM.  Hear about all the resources available to help you help your student get unstuck when they are stuck.  The link will be available on our school website. Area Superintendent Mitzi Merino is extending an invitation to the University City Cluster Meet and Greet on Wednesday, September 13th from 4:30-5:30pm here at Standley Middle School. This meeting will provide an opportunity to learn more about your Area Superintendents and there will be time allotted for questions and answers. They are looking forward to creating partnerships and getting to know our community. On 8/29/23 a resolution was passed by the SDUSD Board of Education naming September as Suicide Prevention month.  SDCOE is hosting virtual evening events (9/26/23 English and 9/27/23 Spanish) Experts will share techniques for recognizing potential signs and teaching what steps should be followed. We are serious about safety and we do monthly drills to prepare for emergency situations.  Today, we held an evacuation drill of the whole school so students will be prepared should a real emergency happen.  Students did a great job and we were back in classes quickly.

We want to remind you that schools will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.  School will resume with a normal schedule on Tuesday.  We have been reviewing the schoolwide expectations during Academic Prep classes for the last two weeks and held Behavior Expectations Assemblies today through PE.  All students riding the bus met to review expectations while using district provided transportation.  At this point, we expect all students to abide by classroom and school policies including getting to class on time, dress code, and citizenship standards.  I want to remind all families that every child at Standley continues to be eligible for free breakfast and lunch all year.  The forms sent home will help determine school and student eligibility for next school year.  We would like to get some additional dates on your calendar for September.

Hello Standley Families,

This is an important message regarding food delivery and campus safety. Due to the unique layout of our school and the potential for unsafe conditions, we will not accommodate food delivery services during the school day. Services like Uber Eats and GrubHub hire drivers who do not undergo thorough background checks, which creates a safety concern for our school. The deliveries also interrupt our staff and take them away from important duties. As a reminder, Standley Middle does not allow food delivery from restaurants or other delivery services. When outside food is delivered at lunch your child will be swarmed with pressure to share and it creates a major disruption.  Please remind your student of this important practice.  As a parent, you are welcome to bring your child’s lunch to the main office if they forget it but remember, all students receive a meal at no cost all year.  Any food delivery services sent to the school will be refused and if the service bypasses the office, it will be confiscated.  Thanks for helping us keep school safe and free of unnecessary distractions.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  We are thankful to you and your children for a smooth start to the year. We enjoyed seeing all the bright eyes and smiling faces throughout the day and especially at lunch when they reconnected with old friends and made new ones.  We thank you for your patience as we work on scheduling enrollment priorities due to an unexpected over enrollment.  Many classes are completely full, and we are still seeing families enroll, but our focus has been on fixing gaps and possible errors while enrolling new students.  Counselors will begin to review course change requests next week and call students in if changes should, or can, be made.  Monday, students will receive a packet of important forms that need your attention.  Please complete all forms and return them to school with your student.  Mark your calendars for Back to School Night at Standley Middle School on September 6th at 6 p.m.  We look forward to welcoming you back, or for the first time, to our campus.  You play a vital role in the future of our school.  You may support us by joining the Standley PTSA as a member or volunteer.

Thanks for listening and have a great weekend.

Hello Standley Families,

This is a special message for our families who may be impacted by the death of the student at the end of summer that was announced last week.  As promised, we were prepared to support those in need all week with additional counselors and activities to help students that were struggling with the loss.  Whether you or your child was connected to the student, loss is hard for everyone.

Coping with the loss of a loved one, especially a young one, can be an overwhelming experience for children. We want to let you know that you are not alone in helping your child. There are resources and organizations available to provide you with the guidance, understanding, and emotional support you need during this time of healing.

If you or any member of your family are seeking help, we've compiled a list of organizations and resources that specialize in providing support to individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide:

Coalition to Support Grieving Students

  https://grievingstudents.org/

National Alliance for Children’s Grief

 https://nacg.org/

Grief Support Groups: The Elizabeth Hospice Children’s Bereavement Program is an option. Their Peer-Based Support Groups are for children ages 3-17 who have experienced the death of a loved one. Enrollment is currently open and at no cost to families. If families are interested in applying on behalf of their children they can use the link below.

https://elizabethhospice.org/grief-support/children/

If students are interested in ongoing individual grief counseling, their guardian can contact The Elizabeth Hospice Services Team at (760) 737-2054 to submit a referral.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Call 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) to speak with a trained crisis counselor 24/7. They can provide immediate assistance and connect you with local resources.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP): The AFSP offers various resources, including local support groups and online forums where you can connect with others who have experienced similar losses.

Therapists and Counselors: Seeking the help of a licensed mental health professional can be incredibly beneficial during this time. They can provide you with individual or family therapy tailored to your needs.

Books and Literature: There are numerous books written by experts in the field of grief and loss that can offer insights, coping strategies, and comfort during this challenging period.

Please remember that healing takes time, and it's okay to reach out to others for support. Students can surround themselves with understanding friends and family to provide a sense of connection and solace.

We are here for you and willing to assist in any way we can. If you need assistance finding local resources, connecting with support groups, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson thanking your family for an amazing first day of school.  All students in attendance first period should have received a Standley Planner to stay organized for the year and a Meal Eligibility Form.  Be sure to review the first 18 pages of the planner with your child as those are the basic expectations at school.

California was the nation’s leader in implementing a Universal Meal Program last school year.  All students received a breakfast and lunch each school day at no cost.  The Meal Program will continue this year and students will be able to receive a breakfast and lunch at no cost.  However, this school year, meal eligibility applications are necessary at Standley.  This is different from last year.  Not enough students qualified for the free meal eligibility to skip the application processing.  In short, we need to determine and certify student meal eligibility for Food Services to receive federal and state reimbursement for the meals served to students this year.

Please complete the paper form and return it to the school.  Only one application is needed per household.  Parents may also fill out the application online at www.sandiegounified.org/food

Eligibility categories also determine LCFF funding, Title I rankings, rebates, and other grant monies available to the district and its schools.  Thanks in advance for helping us qualify moving forward.

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

Out of an abundance of caution, San Diego Unified is delaying the first day of school. Our first day of school will now be on Tuesday, August 22.

We are making this decision based on the latest storm-related information from local officials. This storm is expected to impact our region most severely today, between 4 and 8 p.m., with strong winds and flooding expected in some areas, along with potential power outages and road closures. This may very well result in damage to facilities that may not become evident until Monday morning.

Postponing the first day will allow us to assess any impacts to schools and district offices, and ensure that we are prepared to welcome our students and families to the new school year.

As we continue to monitor the weather and the impact in our community, I remain hopeful that the storm will continue to decrease in its intensity as it moves through our region. However, given the uncertainty of the weather and our need to thoroughly assess any impacts to our facilities, all schools will be closed to students on Monday, August 21.

We know the first day of school brings joy and excitement for students, families and staff. Thank you for your understanding, and for our collective desire to have the best first day of school possible for you, our students, and our staff.

Please take care of one another and follow emergency guidelines.

It is important that you stay connected and informed about public safety conditions in our district and community. Consider signing up for Alert San Diego and visit the County of San Diego website to boost your family’s preparedness for this storm or any other emergencies.

Thank you for your partnership, and stay safe.

With much love,

Dr. Lamont A. Jackson

Superintendent of Public Education

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  The first day of school begins Monday with the first bell ringing at 8:00 a.m. and a 2:55 dismissal.  We will pass out schedules by grade level and alpha to all students starting at 7:30.  Each schedule will have all of their classes, room numbers, teacher names, ID#, and a school map. Students will also get a new lunch PIN card they can use until student IDs are delivered.  Due to the possibility of bad weather, 6th grade will pick up schedules in the library, 7th grade in the auditorium, and 8th grade in the activity room. Please see the attached map or visit our website to see locations if you are new to Standley.  We know students are finding creative ways to look at draft schedules on line but these are not accurate so students must pick up a schedule on Monday and follow that schedule.  They may go to the wrong classes otherwise.  Staff will be out in force to help them find their way and answer questions.  If a student notices a problem like a missing class or the wrong class, they will go to the counseling office during the period with the problem to get it fixed.  We ask that parents do not join students on campus or in buildings to minimize crowds and keep lines organized.  Please do not use the staff parking lots for drop-off or pick-up. The drive way must remain clear for district vehicles and school buses.  Drop-offs and pick-ups are along Governor and/or Radcliffe.  All students will be able to pick up a breakfast item every morning, no charge, and lunch will continue to be free for all students this year with a lunch PIN.  All students need to bring their school issued laptop, charged, with the charging cable and positive attitude.  Teachers will let students know what is recommended throughout the course of the day.  Students will not be marked tardy and we will assist them getting to classes.  If you have a free morning on Monday and would like to help us distribute schedules to students, we have a few sign ups available on the link provided in the corresponding email.  We are super excited to welcome students back to campus and staff have been preparing classrooms and activities worthy of your children.  We look forward to partnering with you on your child’s educational journey this year.  Please refer to our website for more information about Standley and don’t forget to sign up with PTSA!

Dear Standley Families:

It is with great sadness that I notify you of the death of one of our students this week who was a rising 8th grader. All of us at Standley Middle School are deeply saddened by his death.

District counselors will be on campus Monday to assist students, staff and parents as needed. The school counselors will continue to provide support throughout the week. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible to prepare for a smooth opening day while supporting each other as we deal with this sad event.  We will provide outlets for student expression such as drawing, writing and talking in a special lunch time activity in the media center.

It is normal to expect that your child may have feelings and questions.  We encourage you to talk to your child, listen, and respond factually and honestly to his/her concerns, according to age and maturity level.

In an effort to protect the privacy of the student, we are limited in the details we may share. However, we felt that it was important that you know about this situation in case you are hearing rumors from social media or your child.  We ask that you please respect the family's privacy during this difficult time. In the meantime, if I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Sincerely,

William Pearson

This is Principal Bill Pearson calling to welcome your family to Standley Middle School.  Thank you for partnering with us on your child’s middle school journey this year.  Standley offices will re-open on August 7th with office hours of 8-3 until school starts on August 21st.  Be sure to visit our website for all the latest information about the upcoming school year.  We will be working to create schedules for all students to make sure they have all the classes they need and schedules will be provided on the first day of school.  You can help with this important process by keeping us up to date on your enrollment.  If you know you will not be returning to Standley next year, we ask that you email our office ([email protected] ) as soon as possible to let us know.  We can drop your student which then allows you to enroll them in their new school with enough time for the new school to include them in the scheduling process.  We will host a New Student Orientation meeting for families that have not attended a Standley Orientation previously via ZOOM at 6 p.m. on August 8th.   The link will be available on our website and the presentation will be posted for you to review after at your convenience.  We want to get the PTSA Prep Day on your calendar for August 15th from 7:30-10:30 am.   Families will be able to take their school photo for ID’s, purchase PE clothes, take a self-guided tour, and visit information tables for school activities.  Maybe you haven’t even considered school yet, but if you have and want more information, please see our responses to the most frequently asked questions on the FAQ link found on our website or the corresponding email.

We are looking forward to partnering with you this year on the middle school journey.  We hope the remainder of your summer is awesome!

Hello Standley Families,

This is Principal Bill Pearson calling with your end of school year message.  Thank you for partnering with us on your child’s middle school journey this year.  Standley offices will be closed for the summer and re-open on August 7th with office hours of 8-3 until school starts on August 21st.  Be sure to visit our website for all the latest information about the upcoming school year.  We will be working to create schedules for all returning students to make sure they have all the classes they need.  You can help with this important process by keeping us up to date on your enrollment.  If you know you will not be returning to Standley next year, we ask that you call or email our office ([email protected] ) as soon as possible to let us know.  We can drop your student which then allows you to enroll them in their new school with enough time for the new school to include them in the scheduling process.  If you wait until August, your child may miss out on space available elective options or best class placement due to late enrollments. SDUSD will be offering free meals to all students all summer starting next week at multiple locations.  Visit the district website for more information or click on the link provided in the corresponding email.  Finally, we want to get the PTSA Prep Day on your calendar for August 15th from 7:30-10:30 am.   Families will be able to take their school photo for ID’s, purchase PE clothes, take a self-guided tour, and visit information tables for school activities.  On behalf of the entire Standley staff, we wish you and your family an amazing summer!

Hello Standley Families,

This is Principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  Today is the last Friday of the school year and June 14th is the last day for students.  Our main office will be open through Friday of next week and then closes for the summer. Students will have modified schedules for the next 3 days to accommodate 8th grade promotion practice and the ceremony but begin and ends times will remain the same on Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday, the last day of school, will end at 1:10 p.m.

As a reminder, 8th graders received their registration packets for UC High School after they turned in their textbooks in the media center.  There is a letter attached with instructions and they need to be completed and returned to the Standley office before the end of the school year.  After that, they will need to be turned in to UC High over the summer. If your student was absent when packets were distributed, please visit the high school to pick up the required paperwork.

Please help us in congratulating this year's PTSA Honorary Service Award recipients!
Ashleigh Messerman, Honorary Parent Service Award

Hello Standley Families,

This is principal Bill Pearson calling with your weekly update.  UC High counselors were here today to hand out registration packets to all 8th graders after they turned in their textbooks in the media center.  There is a letter attached with instructions and they need to be completed and returned to the Standley office before the end of the year.  After that, you will need to turn them in to UC High over the summer.  Students that purchased yearbooks received passes to the yearbook signing events next week in class today.  These must have a clearance stamp from the library to indicate all items have been returned prior to participating so be sure to help them get all materials returned.  We would like to thank all families that contributed to help make Standley amazing this year through participation in SSC, SGT, ELAC, PTSA, DAC, and UC Educate.  It is your contributions of time, talent, and/or finance that make the difference in good to great and you are appreciated.  Next week is the last full week of school so encourage your students keep on course through the end of the year so we all can enjoy the last days of school and leave on a positive note.  The last day of school is June 14th
